How we rank schools
Mindful Eye's 2026 rankings are generated programmatically from public data and verified community reviews, then refreshed as new data arrives. Here is exactly how a ranking is built.
Data sources
Academic outcomes — state test proficiency (math & ELA), and, for high schools, ACT/SAT scores and graduation rates — come from the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Community reviews are submitted and verified on Mindful Eye.
The Academic Performance rating
Rankings order schools by Mindful Eye's Academic Performance rating. For each school we rank every academic metric against comparable schools nationwide — elementary, middle, and high schools are compared with their own kind, and schools spanning several grade levels (K-8, K-12) against all schools — then blend those rankings and express the result out of 10. Ranking each metric (rather than averaging raw scores) keeps measures on very different scales, like test proficiency and graduation rate, comparable.
Ordering & tie-breakers
Schools are sorted by Academic Performance, highest first. Ties are broken deterministically — by graduation rate, then average review score, then review count, then enrollment — so rankings are stable from one update to the next. Schools without enough test data to score are not ranked.
Quality & freshness
We only publish a ranking when at least five schools qualify, so you never see a “best of” list with a single result. Rankings are recomputed regularly and stamped with the year, so the data you see reflects the latest available figures.
